How does the TippyTalk AAC app work?

Learn how TippyTalk's two core features work — the speech function for real-time communication and the messaging function

TippyTalk has two core features that work together to help non-verbal and speech-impaired individuals communicate, a speech function for real-time expression, and a messaging function that keeps users connected with their community even when they're not together.

The speech function

TippyTalk guides users through communication step by step using illustrated picture cards. Here's how it works:

The user is shown an initial set of pictures representing the beginning of a thought or request

  • The user is shown an initial set of pictures representing the beginning of a thought or request
  • They tap a picture to select it, then tap a second picture to complete the sentence
  • The app speaks and completed sentence aloud on behalf of the user

Because TippyTalk has thousands of possible pictures, parents and caregivers can personalise the app to show only the most relevant cards for their child. You can also upload photos directly from your phone to make the experience feel more familiar and personal.

The messaging function

What makes TippyTalk unique among AAC apps is its built-in messaging capability. When a user selects their picture sequence, TippyTalk can also convert it into a message and send it directly to a caregiver's mobile phone — no reading or writing required from the user.

This means parents, family members, and friends can stay in communication with a non-verbal child even when they're not in the same room or location. Community members can respond with:

  • Audio messages
  • Video messages
  • Emojis
  • Simple words or phrases the individual is familiar with

Together, these two functions make TippyTalk a powerful two-way communication tool. One that supports both in-the-moment expression and ongoing connection with the people who matter most.
